Who is Milorad Ulemek Legija?

Milorad Ulemek Legija was born in 1968 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. He grew up in a poor neighborhood and was involved in petty crimes and thefts. In 1986, he joined the French Foreign Legion, a military unit that recruits volunteers from different countries. He served in various war zones such as Chad, Iraq and Lebanon. He deserted from the Legion in 1992 and returned to Yugoslavia.

He joined the paramilitary group called the Serb Volunteer Guard, led by Zeljko Raznatovic Arkan, a notorious warlord and criminal. The group fought in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Yugoslav wars and committed atrocities against civilians. Legija became Arkan's right-hand man and earned a reputation for his brutality and ruthlessness.

In 1996, he was recruited by Jovica Stanisic, the head of the State Security Service (SDB), to form a new special police unit called the Unit for Special Operations (JSO), also known as the Red Berets. The unit was composed of former paramilitaries, criminals and veterans and was loyal to Slobodan Milosevic, the president of Serbia and Yugoslavia. The unit participated in various operations in Kosovo, Montenegro and Macedonia and was accused of human rights violations and war crimes.

After Milosevic was overthrown by a popular uprising in 2000, Legija became a powerful figure in Serbia's political scene. He supported Vojislav Kostunica, the new president of Yugoslavia, and Zoran Djindjic, the new prime minister of Serbia. However, he soon became dissatisfied with Djindjic's reforms and cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). He also feared that Djindjic would arrest him and extradite him to The Hague.

In 2003, Legija organized a conspiracy to assassinate Djindjic with the help of some members of the JSO and other groups. On March 12, 2003, Djindjic was shot dead by a sniper outside a government building in Belgrade. The assassination triggered a state of emergency and a massive crackdown on organized crime and paramilitary groups. Legija went into hiding and became the most wanted man in Serbia.

He surrendered to the authorities on May 2, 2004 after more than a year on the run. He was tried for several charges including murder, attempted murder, terrorism and conspiracy. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison for killing Djindjic, 40 years for killing Ivan Stambolic, a former president of Serbia, 15 years for attempting to kill Vuk Draskovic, an opposition leader, and several other sentences for other crimes. He is currently serving his sentence in a high-security prison in Belgrade.
